Fall is here

Welcome back to school for a fabulous fall day, Kindergarten. Students enjoyed listening to the experiences and feelings shared by their classmates during community circle. We are working to treat others with respect by listening with our eyes and ears.

Students began their new learning tables today. Recognizing their first name and using a variety of colours to make a pattern while painting with a Q-Tip was lots of fun. Students shared their pattern with their table friends. As we work towards drawing our ideas, students are focusing on drawing real life people. Recognizing people have a head, body, legs and arms put students to the test. Learning to draw with basic shapes is a wonderful starting point. Rolling a dice and subitizing (recognize an arrangement of dots at a glance) was great fun at our math table today. Students rolled a dice, said the number and placed the corresponding number of counters on their ten frame. Practicing our pencil grip and number formation is an important skill in kindergarten. Students were reminded to start tracing numbers at the top and moving downwards at their number tracing table.

Today we practiced writing our names using a capital letter to begin our name and then using lower case for the rest of the letters. Students traced and printed their own names. We then used snap cubes in our learning circle to represent each letter in our name. Students counted their letters and shared with the class.

We went on an outside community walk around the perimeter of the school stopping at our classroom tree. On our walk we identified signs in our community, including stop sign, cross walk and no stopping. Students also identified signs of fall:

I see:

  • leaves falling (Ivy)
  • yellow leaves (Scarlett)
  • red leaves (Griffin)
  • leaves on the ground (Mya)

Our classroom tree had leaves changing from green to yellow. The ground beneath our feet had leaves of brown and orange. What will our fall tree look like in the winter?
