Every Child Matters

Rockstar of the day has officially begun.
Our friend Zach loves to go dirtbiking. He shared some special photos of him and his bike and one where he was dirtbiking with his Dad. Very cool, Zach.
Students shared in Orange Shirt day today. We listened to the story, When We Were Alone. We shared our feelings about how having to change our hair and clothes to go to school would be very hard. We spoke about how our clothing and hair can be a way we show who we are. How does what we are wearing and how we look tell others about us?:

  • I dirtbike and so I like this shirt (Zach)
  • I like iceream so I really like this shirt (Scarlett)
  • I like princesses so I have long hair too (Sydney)
  • I like pink so I wear it a lot (Mya)
Through our community circle, students were encouraged to appreciate the ideas of others as they shared their special gifts, talents and what makes them unique. We acknowledged how every child matters and is important.
  • I go dirtbiking (Brett)
  • I can do a backflip (Ivy)
  • I can swim underwater (Ryder)
  • I can skate (Griffin)
Students were invited to draw their ideas about how they are unique and what gifts and talents they have. After adding their drawings, students were asked to tell about their drawings and Mrs. Johnston wrote their words.
Kayley, Ryder and Zach share what unique gifts, interests and talents they have.

Kindergarten draw their special gifts and talents.
Students began their new learning tables today. Throughout the week students will complete each learning task. Students were asked to sort the letters in their name glue them in order and print their name. Students were challenged to make patterns using colours, shapes or both while working on fine motor beading. Drawing a favourite activity and including background objects to add detail is their task at our writing table. Students had some hands on math action at our playdoh counting. Students were asked to identify the number, make the corresponding number of apples for their tree and represent their number on a ten frame using blocks. What a busy week ahead of us.

Kindergarten were excited for all of this snow and enjoyed a fresh air break outside. This time of year is a reminder to dress your child for the weather. Gaining independence in dressing in snow pants, mittens and hats is very important. Giving your child extra practice with zippers at home is very helpful.

Students are bringing home two new library books today. How exciting. Please return them to the school after you have read them so they may exchange them of for new books next week.
