GRADE 1 HERE WE COME

Students were excited to be back at school-the classroom is alive with energy and excitement. They are ready for Grade 1. Today some Grade 1 students came to our class to share with us what to expect when we get to Grade 1. The most exciting things that students took from our Grade 1 friends were:

In Grade 1 we:

• have to work hard
• learn new words
• learn to add 
• get fun lunch
• get outdoor recess
• write a lot
• learn math
• stay all day

Students had the opportunity to have a Grade 1 lunch. What?!? Well, we had our snack in the lunch area at a table. Students learned and practiced the 3 lunchroom rules: stay seated, eat only your lunch and clean up. How fun, students absolutely loved the big kid eating.

Lunchtime in Grade 1 is going to be amazing. Student learned to keep a clean space, clean up after themselves and where the garbages are located.

Students learned the importance of staying seated safely on our bums with our legs tucked under the table. They were asked to raise their hand if they needed to leave their seat to use the washroom, get a drink or throw away garbage. Being respectful of this rule helps everyone to be safe and to enjoy their lunch time.  

Students were reminded that just like snack time in our classroom that we do not share food with others and we do not touch the lunch or food of our friends. 

Mrs. Johnston gets very hungry during snack time, these snacks are delicious looking. No matter how hard I tried, kids stuck to the rule and no one shared with me. Way to go, smart cookies. 

Water bottles are a great way to teach our children the value of hydration and keeping healthy. Sugary drinks do little to hydrate us after physical activity. 

Socializing while eating was a hit. Kids love making new friends and sharing stories while they eat. What a wonderful opportunity to share in a snack with great kids. 

Students reviewed 2D shapes and drew and labeled some basic shapes. We learned a poem to help us understand what 3D shapes are:

3D Shapes are fat not flat
A cone is like a party hat
A sphere is a bouncy ball
A prism is a building tall
A cylinder is like a can of pop
A cube is like the dice you drop
3D shapes are here and there
3D shapes are everywhere!
